[11] Description of your event
“PROUD VOICES” is Toronto City Opera’s very first Pride celebration cabaret and collaboration with local QTBIPOC+ indie opera company Opéra Queens! Hosted by opera’s drag diva Tanya Smania (she/them), this evening showcases engaging performances from both companies’ professional and community artists in a fabulous, multi-faceted evening of musical theatre, pop, drag, song, and of course – opera! Headlining artists include baritone Austin Larusson, drag bass Dylan Wright, tenor Mike Fan (they/them), pianist Suzanne Yeo, and a community open mic of 2SLGTBQIA+ artists and allies. Enjoy an afternoon of drinks, music, drag, celebration, and community at Buddies in Bad Times Theatre, the iconic queer-trans venue in the heart of the Church-Wellesley Village!

Opéra Queens presents classical music in FULL COLOUR: majority LGBTQ+ and/or BIPOC+ in drag, gender-bent, and queerified! OQ recently made a sold-out début at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival with the High Commission of Canada in the UK. Other collaborations across Turtle Island from BC to the Maritimes include performances with the Canadian Opera Company, Pacific Opera Victoria, Canada’s National Ballet School, and Jeunesses musicales. OQ reinvents canon works such as Carmen or Eugene Onegin while commissioning new works such as by marginalized creators including Morgan-Paige Melbourne, Dr. Jay Marchand Knight, and Steven Sérpa. OQ is supported by Conseil des arts du Canada, Waterloo Public Library, Queer McGill, and more. To learn more, visit www.OperaQueens.ca or on social media @OperaQueens!

Toronto City Opera is passionately committed to Opera for Everyone. We give emerging professionals the opportunity to perform principal roles in the classic opera repertoire. We give our community choristers the skills to perform in a fully staged opera. For our community we provide affordable access to grand opera. www.torontocityopera.com.
