11. Description of the event:
Counterpoint Community Orchestra (CCO) is Canada’s first 2SLGBTQIA+ orchestra, formed in 1984, and performing a primarily classical repertoire continuously since then. We believe we are the oldest and longest running 2SLGBTQIA+ orchestra in the world. Our rehearsals are held at The 519 Community Centre, and the CCO stages three concerts annually, in December, March and June. Several hundred musicians and volunteers have played with and supported the orchestra over the past 40 years. Counterpoint continues to support the principles of sharing the joy of making excellent music together in an environment that is inclusive, diverse, and welcoming. We plan to continue performing our three concerts a year for years to come.

Our final concert for the season will be a celebration of our 40th anniversary. This concert’s program is made up exclusively of works by queer composers and our featured violin soloist is Jaedon Daly, a proudly queer musician, who was the recipient of a scholarship to perform with the CCO in 2022-23 and now performs professionally with the Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra. Along with a dynamic program we will hold a special reception to celebrate our connection to the community over the past 4 decades. Please join us for the celebration and check out our website for more information about CCO. Our June 15 program is: Matinées musicales – Benjamin Britten Violin Concerto – Samuel Barber (featuring violinist Jaedon Daly); Candide Overture – Leonard Bernstein; The Tender Land – Aaron Copland; & Entente Cordiale – Ethel Smyth.
Concert goers will be asked to join us for a special reception after the concert to celebrate this special milestone.
